Mining Museum: 5,000 years of mining history.
The fully restored former hospital building of the Rio Tinto Company Ltd. transports us, through authentic museum landmarks, to the different civilisations that shaped the mining history of the region. A unique space where we can tour the interior of a Roman mine, share the luxury of a Hindu Maharaja, discover the geological secrets of the subsoil or be impressed by the capacity of mining activity to modify a territory and influence the lives of its inhabitants. Archaeology, geology, anthropology, engineering, medicine, teaching, history, economy... all in 17 rooms that also constitute the centre of operations for the Mining Park's tourist activity.
House 21: The British footprint
There is no better way to understand the mark of 100 years of British presence in Riotinto than to visit the English neighbourhood of Bella Vista, an authentic colony where the directors of the Rio Tinto Company Ltd., isolated from the local workers, maintained their customs and privileges. In the heart of this British “island”, Casa 21, built in 1885, is preserved with the details, furniture and belongings that take us back to the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, so that we can immerse ourselves in their way of life, experience the ritual of tea time or imagine leisure time around sports and games that were previously unknown in Spain, such as tennis, polo, cricket… or football.
Iron Rock: The Rainbow Mine
In one of the most beautiful spots in the Cuenca Minera, considered a Protected Landscape, an old gallery of more than 200 metres has been restored, where visitors can feel the excitement of indoor mining and look out from the open-cast mine viewing platform to discover the multicoloured palette of a mineral-rich subsoil, a true underground rainbow. In this extraordinary enclave, scientific studies by the CAB, INTA and NASA have been carried out for the development of the Mars Project. A set of old mining and industrial facilities and the Río Tinto Interpretation Centre complete an impressive space.
